1. Gijón and Asturian cider
Asturias’s cool capital Oviedo might feel like the most obvious place to knock back local cider, but it’s fun-loving seaside Gijón that hosts the real summer cider revelry. Come late August, the Fiesta de la Sidra Natural sees cider-pouring competitions, local brewery tours, and free tastings across town. Topping it all is a yearly attempt to beat the world record number of simultaneous cider escanciadores (pourers).
The 2015 festival runs from August 25-30. To ensure a quiet spot for retreat, stay at the four-star Parador de Gijón, built from an old mill in Isabel la Católica Park. If you’d prefer to be in the thick of it, Cimadevilla’s Hotel Asturias is the ticket.
