El Pais.com–“Guiri” is Spanish slang for “extranjero,” “foreigner.” The term can be used lovingly or quite the contrary. This article from the travel section of Madrid’s El País, the newspaper of record in Spain, features ten expat guiris resident in Madrid and, as an added attraction, their favorite hangouts. They include restaurant and bar owners, journalists, artists, handicraft people, and other creative types. These folks live here. They have a privileged point of view.
