By Craig Foster in the Sydney Morning Herald, February 16, 2014–News that Fernando Hierro is interested in coaching in Australia is intriguing. Indeed, with Spain’s economy in disarray, now is the time to access the immense pool of coaching knowledge and playing expertise in that country at exceptional value.

Consider the case of former FC Barcelona youth coach Josep Gombau (above), now at Adelaide. Although it took his team half the season to adopt an entirely new way of playing, the fruits are obvious. The football is, in my view, outstanding, and Gombau is also contributing to South Australian football by educating a new generation of youth coaches. Even as results were not forthcoming early in the season, the work on the football was evident. The overall project, rather than immediate results in a league offering only two titles, is of much greater importance to our game.
